A Saturday in April. The sky is low and stormy and, frankly, you have to be really motivated to spend an afternoon trying to avoid rain that seems inevitable. Ben is waiting for me at the garage with our flat track motorcycle, a Suzuki 600 DR converted for dirt oval sliding. The motorcycle has just been reborn after Pierre Alexandre Treust crashed it on a track in San Sebastián (Spain). We load the bike into the truck and leave the cobbled streets of Lille for the slag heap road towards Lens. We park discreetly and hide the truck; I take out the wire cutters. We quickly unload the DR from the truck bed; we're eager to ride because this slag heap is simply incredible, made of mounds, canyons, bodies of water, and flat terraced areas, peaking at about sixty meters. Carcasses of cars and two-wheelers in a black, dusty landscape, it looks like a volcano has devoured the scenery. Wearing his Gentlemen’s Factory Flat track inspiration “Street is my trip” t-shirt designed by the English master of the genre, Ryan Quickfall, Ben puts on our latest creation.
